CANVAS ADMIN TIPS: SEPTEMBER

Welcome to PCSD Monthly Canvas Tips 2022-2023!

Each month, Canvas Admin will be posting tips to help you get the most out of your Canvas experience. These tips are resources and are designed to be short and to the point. Each will provide links that share more detailed information and directions for educators who would like to learn more. In addition to being shared through Canvas Global Announcements and email, each monthly Announcement will have a link to the previous months' tips.

Tip #1: Style Guides

This year, we are implementing a new Canvas style guide to help clarify basic expectations for Canvas use across the district and at each grade level. Teachers who participated in the summer Flexible Learning workshops are already familiar with this style guide, but it is new to many of you. The style guides were introduced on August 11th by Suzy Cox via video where she shares the vision for technology use in the district. The Canvas Style Guide has been created to support teachers, students, and families in successfully navigating Canvas. This document provides a quick checklist for you to use when assessing your course and also lays out the expectations in more detail with links and other resources. Use this to help support you while building your Canvas course and in conversations with your Canvas support specialists and administration. Tip #2: Grade Passback

We all love and hate Canvas Grade Passback. There has been come confusion around this year's grade sync process. At the start of the year we were moving to a new system that would handle grade syncing differently than in previous years. However, while testing this new system we found that it did not work correctly and instead of fighting it all year we went back to the previous year's system.

Long story short -- Grade Passback is the same as it has been for the past couple of years

Tip #3: Need Canvas Help

We all know that sometimes technology just doesn't work out the way we had planned. If you run into trouble with Canvas, we have several resources available to help.

Resource #1 - Your Building Specialist

Each school has a Canvas Specialist that can help you troubleshoot through the problems you are having.

Resource #2 - Provo's Canvas Help Course

Last year launched the Canvas Help Course that you can access whenever you have a question or need to see how to use a Canvas feature. Please take some time to explore this course and bookmark it in your favorite browser so you can find it when you are in need of some Canvas guidance.

Resource #3 - Submitting a Work Order via Help Desk

If Canvas misbehaves, you can always submit a Help Desk ticket that will go directly to the Canvas Admin. If you are planning on submitting a Help Desk ticket please remember the following guidelines:

- - - - Detailed description of the issue or help you are requesting - The more information you can give use the faster we will be able to help you with your Canvas troubles or the item you are requesting help with
      - Provide URL(s) of the courses you are having the problem with or need the Canvas Admin to address
      - Provide names, email addresses, and, if possible, SIS ID or Employee number of individuals involved

We want to help you as quickly as possible, so please provide details. You know what the problem is, but we have not seen the issue first-hand, so the more details given the faster we will be able to solve the problem or contact the people that can help us solve the problem.

Recourse #4 - Instructure Support Hotline or Chat

You also have the Instructure 24-Hour Support Hotline and Chat that you can use at anytime to get guidance on anything related to Canvas.
